2015 Golden Rose Stakes Likely for Blueberry Hill

July 14th, 2015

Trainer Liam Birchley was understandably thrilled with the results posted by Blueberry Hill through the recent Brisbane Winter Carnival, and has revealed the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) in early September may figure as her major target in spring.

Posting three wins and two second place finishes from only six competitive starts so far, Blueberry Hill is undoubtedly the standout of the current rising three-year-old generation from Queensland, but returned to the paddock after fading late for sixth in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 6th.

Understandably confident the daughter of Myboycharlie is up to the class, Birchley initially underlined the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in October as a target for Blueberry Hill this time, but is not convinced she is a genuine miler.

“I still haven’t decided exactly which way to go with her,” Birchley said.

“But I am not convinced she is a 1600 metre horse at this stage of her career. I will see how she comes along first.

“One option is the Golden Rose. It is at 1400 metres which should suit her as an early season three-year-old.”

Debuting for success in the Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Plate (1050m) on February 28th, Blueberry Hill continued to impress with success in a Sunshine Coast minor over 1200m on April 5th before charging home to finish an agonizingly-close second in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Trophy (1200m) on April 25th.

Returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) in what was undoubtedly her most impressive performance to date on May 9th; Blueberry Hill was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight of the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) but still managed an impressive and close second.
