Coram Eyeing Progression to 2014 Golden Rose Stakes

August 8th, 2014

While all eyes will be fixed on the Listed Rosebud (1200m) in Sydney as several 2014 Golden Rose Stakes  prospects return to racing, trainer Troy Corstens is hopeful lightly raced gelding Coram will take a huge leap towards the Group 1 feature with another positive performance in Melbourne.

Returning to racing in exceptional form since being gelded over winter, Coram broke from the gates well with the Dennis Family Homes Plate (1200m) on July 18th and never looked troubled, charging home to win by more than six lengths.

Understandably thrilled with the first-up performance, Corstens told AAP he believes Coram will have to win the Joyann Erskine & Philip Carroll Handicap (1400m) at Flemington to keep hopes of a Golden Rose berth on September 13th alive.

“Obviously Saturday is going to be a really big step and is going to tell us exactly where we are going to be heading,” Corstens said.

“The short-term plan will be the Golden Rose if we can get there.

“He will have to run really well if not win on Saturday to keep pushing forward towards that, but that’s where we are trying to head.

He has always shown promise. He didn’t beat much and we’re not getting ahead of ourselves, but he won how we wanted to see him win.”

Finishing a fighting fifth amongst classy competition in the Inglis Banner 2.y.o Open (1000m) on debut in October 2013, Coram was disappointing over two starts in autumn; finishing ninth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) first-up and sixth in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) on February 15th, more than highlighting a need for gelding.

Yet to be confirmed for a racing path beyond the 2014 Golden Rose Stakes should he be accepted, Coram is currently offered as outright $3.20 favourite for success at Flemington this weekend, but will be required to overcome the slightly wide barrier 8.
