Inkling Still a Chance for 2014 Golden Rose Stakes Tilt

July 25th, 2014

Unable to match the late pace and finishing a shock third in the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1200m) last time out, trainer Peter Snowden has confirmed Inkling will still be a chance of lining up for the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13th should he perform well this weekend.

Debuting to racing with a resounding near-six length victory in the More Than Ready Plate (1100m) on June 18th, Inkling immediately stamped his claims as one to watch over major three-year-old events of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Clearly green around the edges when unable to overcome a poor start and over-racing through the middle stares of his most recent start, Snowden said he wasn’t completely disillusioned by the ill-fated performance, and believes there are several positives to be taken ahead of his third-up run on Saturday.

“I thought his run was quite solid last start,” Snowden told AAP.

“He over-raced a bit early and it probably cost him his chance of winning.

“If he’s going to measure up to better races in the coming weeks he needs to stand up here.”

Yet to confirm any future plans for the Duporth colt, Snowden said he is mindful Inkling is currently amidst his maiden racing preparation, and may target the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) on August 30th before a brief return to the spelling paddock.

“I’m mindful it is his first prep and it’s still a fair way to go to that race,” Snowden said.

“Whether he gets to that or one of the lead-ups maybe, well wait and see.

“From where I stand now I would think he’d have this run and maybe the Run To The Rose in a fortnight.

“Then maybe we give him a breather and come in at the back end of the Melbourne carnival.”
