Golden Rose 2011 Form Guide

September 9th, 2011

#1 Helmet

Career: 6: 4-0-2

Helmet is yet to finish outside the placings in any of his six runs and has a perfect second-up record. With the persistent rain in Sydney today it is interesting to note that Helmet has won his only start on a Heavy rated track. With the pace likely controlled by this horse, it is hard to think even Smart Missile could out-do him here.

#2 Smart Missile

Career: 3: 3-0-0

Smart Missile is unbeaten across all of his three starts and is to date the only horse to have beaten Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond Stakes winner Sepoy. Smart Missile also won the Run To The Rose last start against almost this same field. Should the race be run to suit him, with a speed up front, you would have to assume he would be the winner.

#3 Foxwedge

Career: 6: 3-1-0

Foxwedge was only beaten by a neck in the Run To The Rose by Smart Missile and has more than proved he is a quality horse. He has always placed at this track and is familiar with the course. He could really surprise here if the rave runs to suit.

#4 Manawanui

Career: 4: 3-0-1

Fantastic victory last start in the Up & Coming Stakes where he beat the quality field by 4.5 lengths. Owners and trainer must be confident he can win after paying up the $50,000 late entry fee. He’s the unknown in this race as he hasn’t faced this field before. Wouldn’t be surprised if was up there at the end, however not sure the Up & Coming was quite at the same level.

#5 Aeronautical

Career: 4: 2-0-0

It’s a big step up for Aeronautical here, with the gelding’s last win being in the Listed The Rosebud over a month ago. Jockey Nathan Berry has sung this horses praises, however, and he certainly deserves his place in this field. It seems unlikely he will win but is a definite place chance.

#6 Flight Of Pegasus

Career: 4: 1-0-1

Flight Of Pegasus comes into this field carrying good form, but it pales in comparison to the other 5 runners. He finished fifth in the Run To The Rose and is completely unwanted by punters. However, had his barrier not been so wide in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes last prep he very possible would have won that ahead of Uate and Hot Snitzel. For the fantastic odds being offered, he is definitely worth an each way flutter.
