There are only 10 horses left in contention for the Golden Rose Stakes 2011, late entries and declarations taken by Racing NSW on Monday.
Heading the list of contenders for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), the opening elite level race of the season to light up Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday August 10, is the Anthony Cummings-trained excitement machine Smart Missile.
Now is your last chance to get the juicy futures odds on the Golden Rose with the field released on Wednesday so bet now with Luxbet!
Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile took their career record to three wins from three runs last start when they defeated a field of fellow Rose rivals at Rosehill in the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m).
Also boasting the honour of being the only horse to have defeated crack sprinter Sepoy to date, Smart Missile is the odds-on $1.90 favourite in the Golden Rose odds at Luxbet.
Still, there could be value outside of the raging favourite here.
There is no doubting Smart Missile’s ability, but Saturday’s Golden Rose Stakes will be the three-year-olds’ first start at the 1400 metres.
It will also be the lightly-raced galloper’s maiden second-up run, Smart Missile never having had to back-up from a race.
“It will be interesting to see,” Cummings said.
“It’s a little bit of a question mark the 1400 metres, it’s his first test at that but I’m pretty happy with how he has come out of his first-up run.”
Cummings has also tentatively entered two of Smart Missile’s stablemates for the 2011 Golden Rose with Encosta De Lago filly Houston Benefactor ($35) and Ain’t She Grand ($71) who has had just one run to date when runner-up on debut at Canterbury on August 24.
The horses that ran one-two behind Smart Missile last-start in the Run To The Rose are gearing up to turn the tables this Saturday with the John O’Shea-trained Foxwedge and Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Helmet both expected to be accepted in the Golden Rose 2011 final field.
Helmet is the $5 second favourite in Golden Rose betting at Luxbet, the highly rated Exceed And Excel colt expected to improve as they step up in distance having won the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) back-to-back last season.
Foxwedge is very generously priced in the Golden Rose odds, the first-up Group 3 San Domenico Stakes winner having been defeated by only quarter-of-a-length in the Run To The Rose but paying double figures at $12 through Luxbet.
Aside from Smart Missile and Helmet, two other youngsters are at single figure odds to win with Manawanui ($7) and Aeronautical ($8.50).
Ron Leemon’s improving Oratorio gelding Manawanui won the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) in their new season debut at Warwick Farm on August 20 by a blistering four and half lengths, prompting connections to pay the hefty $50,000 late Golden Rose entry fee yesterday.
Aeronautical is another progressive gelding on the way up, the most recent run by the Lionel Cohen-trained son of Encosta De Lago being their three and a half length victory in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Randwick on August 6.
One person firmly on the Aeronautical bandwagon is jockey Nathan Berry who has ridden the galloper for their two career wins to date.
“He is going into a Group One, one of the best Golden Roses I’ve seen, and I don’t doubt his ability one bit,” Berry said.
Rounding out the 2011 Golden Rose nominees are Snowden’s Group 3 winning filly Anise ($13), the John McArdle-trained Delago’s Lad ($35) and Flight Of Pegasus ($35).
