2011 Golden Rose Betting Favourites Run at Rosehill

August 23rd, 2011

This Saturday Rosehill Racecourse will host one of the traditional lead-up races to the Golden Rose 2011, the Run To The Rose which will feature a number of the early favourites to win the opening Group One race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) drew 10 nominations including the leading Golden Rose betting favourites at Luxbet Smart Missile ($4) and Helmet ($6).

Both promising horses are making their new season debuts after dominant performances during their juvenile preps.

Anthony Cummings holds high hopes that Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile can reach their full potential this spring after missing out on Group 1 glory last season, the galloper scratched from the barriers of the Golden Slipper.

To date Smart Missile remains unbeaten from two starts, most recently securing the status as the only horse to defeat Peter Snowden’s Golden Slipper winner Sepoy when he beat them fair and square in the Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 12.

Smart Missile showed they were busting to return to Rosehill and to race conditions with their impressive winning hit-out at Randwick on August 5, and Cummings is confident they are the horse to beat in not only the Run to the Rose this weekend but also the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at the Gardens on September 10.

“I’ll be surprised the day he gets beaten,” Cummings said of Smart Missile.

“His trial was awesome and Glen Boss (jockey) has a big opinion of the horse.”

Cummings is also convinced that Smart Missile is the better horse between them and Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Helmet.

“(Helmet is) a talented horse and he has a very good record but my view is he is not as good as Smart Missile,” he said.

Darley’s No. 1 trainer Snowden, however, knows just how much ability his AJC Sires Produce Stakes – Champagne Stakes double winning Exceed And Excel colt Helmet has and believes there could be a new Golden Rose 2011 favourite come Saturday afternoon.

“He has only had the one trial but he is forward enough to win (on Saturday),” Snowden said.

“It is going to be short of his best distance but being fresh I’m sure he’ll put himself somewhere there.

“This will top him off well…then he’s got two weeks for the Golden Rose and he’ll acquit himself there.”

Another top fancy in the Golden Rose odds that is set to contest the Run to the Rose on Saturday is John O’Shea’s Foxwedge.

Foxwedge is currently paying a generous $11 to become the 2011 Golden Rose winner through Luxbet and goes into Saturday’s showdown second-up after winning the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill first-up on August 13.

San Domenico Stakes runner-up, Peter Snowden’s General Nediym filly Anise, is another Run To The Rose hopeful.

Anise sits as a $13 chance in the Luxbet Golden Rose 2011 odds and gets her chance to match it with the boys again on Saturday.
