Golden Rose Stakes 2011 First Acceptances & Odds

July 25th, 2011

The race is on towards the richest event of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, with first acceptances and betting markets released for the 2011 Golden Rose.

One of the year’s premier three-year-old showdowns, this year’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) will take place at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday September 10.

With Golden Rose prize money set at a lucrative $1 million, the feature is sure to attract a top-class final field of hopefuls.

Last week the Australian Turf Club (ATC) took 132 first acceptances for the Golden Rose 2011, the race to be sponsored by Tooheys New.

“The first acceptances boast the full complement of stars from the rising three-year-old crop,” the ATC’s Executive General Manger of Racing Matt Rudolph said.

As the spring equivalent for three-year-olds to last season’s AAMI Golden Slipper, the Golden Rose first acceptances attracted many of the top performing juveniles from the autumn.

Among the early entries are this year’s top three Golden Slipper runners: winner Sepoy, runner-up Mosheen and third placegetter Elite Falls.

Already a dual Group 1 winner having also saluted in the Blue Diamond Stakes, the Peter Snowden-trained Sepoy has opened the early $4 favourite in the Golden Slipper Odds.

He is followed by Anthony Cummings’ progressive Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile, the only horse to have defeated Sepoy to date, as well as the fellow Snowden-trained Helmet who are both on the second line of Golden Slipper Betting at $5.50.

If Snowden choose to accept Sepoy for the Golden Rose final field, the race will shape up as a scintillating rematch between him and the undefeated Smart Missile.

Smart Missile caused a punters’ upset when they got the better of Sepoy in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March, but was a sensational scratching from the Golden Slipper in the barriers, missing their chance to again prove themselves against Sepoy.

“Peter Snowden and Darley hold the key to the race having won every Group 1 race for this crop and I’m sure they will be looking to keep that record intact,” Rudolph said.

“Smart Missile is the X-Factor coming into the spring and as always the early season stakes races such as The Rosebud on Saturday week will unearth some exciting new contenders.”

Winner of the AJC Sires Produce Stakes – Champagne Stakes Group 1 double last season, Exceed And Excel colt Helmet is the more likely Golden Rose final acceptor of Snowden’s leading duo.

“He’ll kick off with tow run in Sydney, maybe taking in the Golden Rose,” Snowden said of Helmet whose main spring aim will be the 2011 Caulfield Guineas in Melbourne.

Now is the time to get in and place your early Golden Rose bets at the best price before markets firm closer to the event.
