Final Field & Preview for 2010 Golden Rose

August 24th, 2010

This Saturday Rosehill Racecourse will come alive with the running of the showcase event of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).

A final field of 15 classy contenders for the 2010 Golden Rose was released today, with the barrier draw also announced having a great impact on the betting markets for the three-year-olds, set weights feature.

After a number of the early favourites including Gai Waterhouse’s recent Run To The Rose winner Squamosa in barrier 14, Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time in barrier 13 and Toorak Toff in barrier nine drew wide, their odds to win the Golden Rose have drifted out.

Sydney galloper Masquerader is now likely to start as the pronounced favourite after drawing ideally with barrier two.

The David Payne-trained colt ran a promising first-up second to Squamosa in the Run To The Rose and will be hard to beat with the favourable barrier draw with Hugh Bowman aboard on Saturday.

The punters are also getting behind last year’s Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily who will jump from barrier 10 and still fancy the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Toorak Toff following the Show A Heart’s eye-catching return to racing in the Vain Stakes at Caulfield.

Hinchinbrook, who was withdrawn from the Starlight Stakes due to illness, has also been accepted for the Golden Rose.

The inclusion of Hinchinbrook came as a shock for many punters following trainer Gerald Ryan’s announcement last week that the Fastnet Rock colt would miss the event.

Drawn well in barrier four, if at full fitness Hinchinbrook should be right up there in the race.

Other top contenders that will benefit from their favourable barrier draws and are likely to shorten in the markets include Michael Tubman’s consistent filly Chance Bye in barrier three and last-start winner of the Quezette Stakes Panipique in barrier six.
