Golden Rose Stakes

The Golden Rose is the most prestigious and lucrative race at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, conducted in late August to early September annually.

A Group 1 race, elevated from its Group 2 status in 2009, for three-year-olds at set weights, the Golden Rose is often the primary spring target for many of Sydney’s runners and is worth $1 million in prizemoney, $650,000 of which goes to the connections of the first placegetter.

The Golden Rose, a relatively young feature race first run in 2003, is one of two group races held at the meeting, the other being the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1100m).

Golden Rose Lead Up Races

The primary prep race for horses on their way to the riches the Golden Rose offers is the Group 3 The Run To The Roses. Run over a slightly shorter 1300m at the same track a fortnight before, The Run To The Roses provides three-year-olds with the ideal trial run.

The last horse to win The Run To The Roses – Golden Rose double was the now-retired Denman in 2009.

Earlier in the season, the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Randwick is another good lead-up run for horses heading towards a Golden Rose victory.

Golden Rose Winners

Many quality three-year-olds that went on to become champion Australian racehorses have seen success in the Golden Rose including Denman (2009) and Court Command (2005).

Below is a list of the Golden Rose winners from 2003 – 2009. Due to the schedule of the racing season, there were officially two editions of the Golden Rose run in 2008.
